Bushra Bibi, the wife of PTI leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been released from Adiala Jail after being granted bail in the Toshakhana 2.0 case. She spent nine months in jail, having been sentenced to 14 years in prison on January 31 of this year.
Security has been tightened at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi following her release. Additional security forces have been deployed, and the jail administration is completing the necessary legal formalities after receiving the release order.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended Bushra Bibi’s sentence in the Toshakhana case, leading to her re-arrest in the Toshakhana 2.0 case. On Wednesday, Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb granted her bail, requiring her to submit a bond of Rs1 million. This decision provides temporary relief to Bushra Bibi, who faces allegations related to the improper handling of state gifts.
During the hearing, Justice Aurangzeb questioned the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) investigative officer about the necessity of further interrogation of Bushra Bibi. The officer confirmed that no additional investigation was required, leading the judge to grant bail.
The court referenced similar practices in other countries, noting that leaders like the British Prime Minister have taken gifts home according to regulations. The judge highlighted that nations such as Azerbaijan display gifts in museums, with the only photograph of a Pakistani leader being that of Benazir Bhutto.
The Toshakhana case involves allegations of corruption against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, specifically regarding the sale of gifts received from foreign dignitaries.
In a related development, the indictment proceedings against both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, which were scheduled for the same day, were postponed due to security concerns. Initially set to take place at Adiala Jail, the hearing was moved to Islamabad’s Judicial Complex. However, ongoing security concerns prevented the proceedings, and the court rescheduled the indictment for October 26.
