PTI formally decides to join Judicial Commission of Pakistan

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formally resolved to join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, with members set to be selected from both houses of Parliament. This decision, which awaits confirmation from PTI’s core committee and final approval from Chairman Imran Khan, was taken following a special session of PTI’s political committee, as reported by Express News.

During the meeting, a detailed briefing was provided on the National Assembly Speaker’s letter regarding the opposition’s nomination of two members to the Judicial Commission. The briefing highlighted the expanded responsibilities of the 13-member commission, which will now include appointing judges to the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Federal Shariat Court, as well as monitoring High Court judges’ performance and compiling annual reports.

The Judicial Commission will have the authority to propose names for High Court judges and establish benches in the Supreme and High Courts. A third of the members can convene a session, and decisions by the commission will be made by a simple majority. According to Clause D, any member’s absence will not affect the validity of decisions, which will remain legitimate even if all members are not present.

PTI’s political committee unanimously approved the proposal to participate in the Judicial Commission, underscoring the critical role the opposition’s two members will play in the commission’s decision-making process. The opposition’s nominees will be announced after formal approval by Imran Khan. Additionally, the meeting reaffirmed PTI’s firm stance on the 26th constitutional amendment.
